Whistleblower Stepanova attacks IOC but won't seek Rio entry via CAS

Rio de Janeiro (dpa) - Russian whistleblower Yulia Stepanova won‘t try to force her way into the Rio Olympics 800 metres field via the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) but found harsh words again for the International Olympic Committee (IOC) over her case.

"Our disappointment and and grief are immense ... Even though it breaks our heart we want to clarify that it was never our intention to take legal action," Stepanova and her husband Vitali said in a statement Friday night.

The couple provided vital information for a German television documentary and a first report by the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) about widespread and state-sponsored doping practices in Russia.

The was allowed to compete as a neutral athlete by the athletics body IAAF but, although lauding her contribution in the case, the IOC controversially vetoed her appearance on the Olympic track because it did not allow Russian athletes with a doping past to Rio.

This IOC criteria was overthrown by the Court of Arbitration (CAS) on Thursday in the case of three Russian athletes but Stepanova decided not to make an appeal on her own.

However, Stepanova attacked the IOC, saying her ban was "a tough blow" and "follows no logic apart from the desire to punish a fully credible informer."

"We are disappointed that the IOC is too blind to realise what risk Yulia took upon herself to expose systematic cheating in Russia."
