'We are angry': Thousands rally in Polish capital for abortion rights

Warsaw (dpa) - An estimated 55,000 protesters marched through the streets of Warsaw on Friday to protest a tightening of the nation‘s strict abortion laws.

"Those who haven‘t given birth shouldn‘t vote!" chanted tens of thousands at a rally in the Polish capital for legal abortions.

Under a slogan of "black protest," demonstrators wearing dark clothing marched through the capital to fight legislation proposed by the pro-life "Stop Abortions" movement that would criminalize the abortion of malformed foetuses.

"We are angry," one female protester told dpa. "It‘s sick that we should bring children who are condemned to die into the world."

Men also took part in the protest. "We have to show our solidarity with our women," one young man told dpa.

Polish abortion law, already among the strictest in Europe, dictates that women can only terminate pregnancies if the mother has been raped, if the pregnancy endangers the mother‘s life or if the child has a serious disability.

Abortion opponents are now seeking a ban of the final condition, and a parliamentary committee has recently approved the continued debate of the proposal.

Surveys show a majority of Poles in favour of loosening the laws. Apart from Warsaw, rallies were also held in Krakow, Poznan and Wroclaw. Proponents of the stricter laws also took to the streets.
