WADA suspends Rio doping control lab six weeks before Olympics

Washington (dpa) - Six weeks before the start of the Olympic Games in Brazil, the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) announced Friday that it has suspended the accreditation of the Brazilian Doping Control Laboratory.

The suspension prohibits the laboratory from carrying out all anti-doping analyses on athletes‘ urine and blood samples, WADA said in a news release. The laboratory, which is in Rio de Janiero, was notified of the suspension on Wednesday.

WADA said it suspended the laboratory "due to a nonconformity with the International Standard for Laboratories (ISL)."

The laboratory may appeal the suspension at the Court of Arbitration for Sport. In the meantime WADA will work closely with it to resolve the issue that has been identified, said Olivier Niggli, incoming WADA director general.

WADA will ensure that samples that would have gone to the laboratory will be transported "securely, promptly and with a demonstrable chain of custody" to another WADA-accredited laboratory, Niggli said.

"This will ensure that there are no gaps in the anti-doping sample analysis procedures and that the integrity of the samples is fully maintained," he said.

He also assured athletes that the suspension will be lifted only when the laboratory is operating "optimally" and the best solution has been put in place to ensure that sample analysis for the Games "is robust."
