WADA report: Diack sought IAAF sponsorship money for Olympic vote

Munich (dpa) - A report on corruption and doping in athletics suggested Thursday that heavily implicated former IAAF president Lamine Diack tried to sell his vote for the 2020 Olympics host city in exchange for sponsorship money for the ruling athletics body.

The report has also led to calls for a close look into the awarding of the world athletics championships since the 2009 edition.

The World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) said in a footnote of its independent committee report that allegations around the 2020 Games surfaced via transcripts by Turkish officials of meetings with Diack‘s son Khalil in connection with an apparent extortion attempt of Turkish runner Asli Alptekin.

Lamine Diack was a member of the International Olympic Committee when Tokyo was elected 2020 host in 2013. Istanbul was also bidding for the Games. Diack was suspended as honorary IOC member over the scandal.

"Transcripts of the various discussions between Turkish individuals with KD (Khalil Diack) make reference to a discussion regarding the Olympic city bidding process for the 2020 Summer Olympic Games," the footnote says.

"It is stated that Turkey lost LD‘s (Lamine Diack) support because they did not pay sponsorship moneys of 4 to 5 million dollars either to the Diamond League or IAAF. According the transcript the Japanese did pay such a sum. The 2020 Games were awarded to Tokyo."

The report said the issue was not further investigated "for it was not within our remit."

The footnote was in connection with another claim that there "may be reason to believe that senior IAAF officials and others acting on their behalf may have benefited from decisions of the IAAF to award certain cities and countries" the athletics worlds.

The committee headed by IOC member and former WADA chief Richard Pound has suggested "a vigorous forensic look" into the allegations.
