Berlin (dpa) - Europe‘s biggest carmaker Volkswagen said Friday global sales chalked up a record in September thanks to demand for its sports-utility vehicles and strong growth in China.

Based in the northern German city of Wolfsburg, VW said world-wide deliveries breached the one-million mark in September, representing a rise of 6.6 per cent compared with the same month last year.

The sales figure for September was the highest ever recorded for the carmaker in a single month.

During the first nine months of the year, VW delivered 7.8 million vehicles - a rise of 2.6 per cent over the same period last year.

This was despite September sales in the carmaker‘s home market in Germany contracting by 3.3 per cent.

"China continues to play an important role," said VW group sales chief Fred Kappler with deliveries to the world‘s biggest car market rising by 6.3 per cent to 406,500 vehicles.

The group‘s new SUV models have in particular been popular worldwide, said Kappler.

VW‘s total deliveries climbed 1.5 per cent in Europe in September and by 13.5 per cent in North America.

Deliveries to Latin America rocketed up 68.4 per cent to 47,800 vehicles.
