Volkswagen recalls 4.9 million cars in China over airbag fault

Beijing/Wolfsburg, Germany (dpa) - Volkswagen has to recall almost 4.9 million vehicles in China over a possible fault in their airbags.

The airbags were produced by the Japanese company Takata, the Chinese safety authorities AQSIQ said on their website on Thursday.

VW said vehicles by joint ventures FAW-VW, SAIC-VW and FAW-Audi, and by imported vehicles from Volkswagen, Audi, Seat and Skoda were affected.

The recalls are expected to start in March 2018, AQSIQ said.

Worldwide there has not yet been a case of a faulty Takata airbag in a VW car, the company said on Thursday.

The company said it was responding to a request from the Chinese authorities in making the recall.

Apart from VW, many other carmakers have had to recall and repair vehicles with faulty Takata airbags.

Takata airbags containing ammonium nitrate are liable to deploy if they are hot for too long or if the air is very humid. They were blamed for several deaths in the United States.

Early this year, Takata agreed to plead guilty to US charges related to falsifying testing data and reports to carmakers with fines and compensation for victims and carmakers totalling 1 billion dollars.

Three Takata executives face criminal charges in connection with the safety defects.

Founded in 1933, Takata filed for bankruptcy protection in Japan and the United States in June following the scandal over the recalls, in what was the biggest bankruptcy in Japanese history.
