Rio de Janeiro (dpa) - Italy‘s Elia Viviani claimed gold in the men‘s omnium in track cycling Monday while Britain‘s Mark Cavendish ended his long wait for an Olympic medal by taking silver.

Viviani topped the multi-discipline event with 207 points as he held off Cavendish in the final points race. Cavendish in turn did enough to claim second on 194 with Lasse Hansen of Denmark taking bronze on 192.

However, the event was overshadowed by South Korean cyclist Park Sang Hoon being stretchered away following an accident which appeared to be caused by Cavendish cutting him off.

The gold medal is the biggest success of Viviani‘s career while Cavendish, a multiple world champion, finally has his first medal on his third trip to the Games.
