The name Villejuif was recorded for the first time in a papal bull of 1119 as "Villa Judea", the meaning of which is still debated. Some consider that the meaning was quite simply "land of the Jews", "estate of the Jews", perhaps in reference to some Roman ruins there which people in the Middle Ages deemed haunted by Saracens and Jews. However, modern historians consider that the etymology of "Villa Judea" was more probably "estate of Juvius or Juveus", a Gallo-Roman landowner.
