Vietnam oil executive asks court for chance to return to Germany

Hanoi (dpa) - A Vietnamese oil executive allegedly kidnapped by Vietnamese agents in Berlin last year has asked the court trying him for economic crimes for the chance to return to Germany, his lawyer said Wednesday.

Nguyen Van Quynh, one of Trinh Xuan Thanh‘s lawyers, told dpa that his client asked the court - due to hand down a verdict on Monday - for the chance to be reunited with his wife and children, who are still in Berlin.

The German government claims that Vietnamese agents kidnapped Thanh in Berlin after the sought political asylum in July. The Vietnamese government maintains that he returned voluntarily.

Thanh has confessed to certain elements of economic mismanagement at Construction Joint Stock Corporation (PVC), a subsidiary of the Vietnamese oil firm PetroVietnam, but has denied the embezzlement charges.

Prosecutors have recommended 13 to 14 years‘ imprisonment for the embezzlement charge, as well as a life sentence for the charge of economic mismanagement.

Speaking to the jury, Thanh also expressed regret for his actions, the VNExpress news site reported.

"I am very regretful, very repentful," Trinh Xuan Thanh told the court after being allowed to say his final words before the verdict. "I would like to send my apology to the leaders of the party, the government and people across the country."

Thanh‘s father told dpa that the kidnapping allegations did not come up in the statement.

"Thanh did not mention whether he was kidnapped in Germany because the court did not ask him about it," Trinh Xuan Gioi told dpa. "We are like a candle before wind, facing a lot of harassment and pain, even humiliation."
