Vegan, hip-hop, pro-animal parties compete with Merkel's CDU in poll

Berlin (dpa) - More than 40 parties are to stand at next month‘s German election, including groups representing the hard left and radical right, through to those calling for support for vegetarians and vegans, animals, hip-hop and more spirituality in politics.

The Federal Statistics Office (Destatis) said Tuesday that of the 48 parties admitted to run in the September 24 election, 42 are to field candidates.

While the Bavarian Party wants to see the southern state of Bavaria pull out of the European Union, the Violets want to see German politics take a more spiritual turn. The Urban party is promoting hip-hop.

There are also a slew of parties with platforms supporting animal rights and the environment, along with several parties promoting families and the Christian church.

Another group is demanding that Berlin consult more directly with voters through referendums. The MLPD is calling for the revival of Marxism-Leninism.

However, in reality, only a handful of the parties planning to stand in the election have a chance of securing representation in the lower house of parliament, the Bundestag, when voters go to the polls next month.

These include Chancellor Angela Merkel‘s Christian Democrats and their Bavarian-based Christian Social Union, the pro-business Free Democrats, the centre-left Social Democrats, the environmentalist Greens, the hard-left Die Linke and the right-wing nationalist Alternative for Germany.
