Rio de Janeiro (dpa) - South African golfer Jaco Van Zyl has focused his season around chasing a gold medal at the 2016 Olympics and said Monday he is bemused by his fellow pros shunning the trip to Rio de Janeiro.

"Honestly, I can‘t feel that the Zika virus would be their reason not to go, the Zika virus is in Florida," Van Zyl said.

"I think they have got other reasons for not wanting to participate and the Zika virus is a very convenient way for them to get out of it."

Golf has returned to the Olympics in Rio after an absence of 112 years but the men‘s tournament has been plagued by high-profile stars refusing to take part.

Australia‘s world number one Jason Day, Northern Ireland‘s Rory McIlroy and America‘s Jordan Spieth were some of those to withdraw, citing Zika or other health concerns.
