Washington (dpa) - The US Department of Homeland Security has ordered government agencies to stop using software from Russian company Kaspersky Lab in the face of potential intelligence risks.

The department pointed to ties between the company‘s officials and Russian intelligence, and to Russian laws that allow intelligence agencies to acquire information from Kaspersky.

"The risk that the Russian government, whether acting on its own or in collaboration with Kaspersky, could capitalize on access provided by Kaspersky products to compromise federal information and information systems directly implicates US national security," the department said in a statement on Wednesday.

The move comes amid heightened concern about Russian cyberintrusions in the face of alleged Russian interference in the US presidential elections.

The order requires US government departments to identify any Kaspersky products they are using over the next 30 days, to make plans to stop using them within 60 days and to complete the move within 90 days.

"Safeguarding federal government systems requires reducing potential vulnerabilities, protecting against cyberintrusions and anticipating future threats," the department said.

"While this action involves products of a Russian-owned and -operated company, the department will take appropriate action related to the products of any company that presents a security risk based on DHS‘s internal risk management and assessment process."

The company is known for its anti-virus software and had come under increased scrutiny from US officials in recent months.
