US Olympic chief resigns after Larry Nassar abuse scandal

Los Angeles (dpa) - The United States Olympic Committee (USOC) on Wednesday announced its chief executive‘s resignation due to health concerns, following the abuse scandal involving team physician Larry Nassar.

Scott Blackmun, who had been USOC‘s head since 2010, said last month that he had been diagnosed with prostate cancer and would not travel to the Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang, South Korea.

Earlier this month, two US senators called for the 60-year-old‘s resignation after the Wall Street Journal suggested he had been told in 2015 about allegations against Nassar, who was jailed last month.

In response, USOC said it would not part ways with its chief until an independent investigation was completed.

That changed with Wednesday‘s statement, which the organization also used to announce reforms including support for gymnasts impacted by Nassar‘s crimes.

"We have mutually agreed it is in the best interest of both Scott and the USOC that we identify new leadership so that we can immediately address the urgent initiatives ahead of us," USOC chairman Larry Probst said in the statement.

The organization‘s goal was to protect and support all its athletes, USOC athlete representative Whitney Ping said in the statement.

"We are absolutely committed to our ongoing and increased efforts to ensure current and future athletes can train and perform in an environment where they feel safe and supported," Ping said.

"As the independent investigation continues, we will continue to look for ways to strengthen them even further."

More than 265 women and girls said they were abused by Nassar, with many speaking publicly about their experiences - which date as far back as the 1990s.
