US, EU ambassadors to Kenya: Credible election will be difficult

Nairobi (dpa) - Holding credible repeat elections this week in Kenya will be difficult due to security concerns and the political situation in the East African nation, according to ambassadors from the United States and several European Union countries.

"Unfortunately, the deteriorating political environment is undermining preparations for the new presidential election," a statement on the US Embassy‘s website dated Monday said.

"Inflammatory rhetoric, attacks on institutions, and growing insecurity all make holding a credible and fair poll more difficult."

The statement carried the names of diplomats from the US and several EU countries, including US ambassador Robert Godec and British high commissioner Nic Hailey.

Weeks after the results of August‘s vote were nullified - dividing opinion and bringing thousands out in protest - Kenyans are set to return to the polls Thursday as analysts warn of potential unrest.

The Supreme Court nullified the result of the August 8 election due to irregularities, after leading opposition candidate Raila Odinga lodged a complaint, claiming that the computers of the electoral commission had been hacked.

A senior member of the country‘s electoral commission fled to the US last week, citing death threats and claiming that there was no way the vote would be free and fair.

After Kenya‘s 2007 election, more than 1,000 people died in clashes that were mainly divided along ethnic lines.
