Rio de Janeiro (dpa) - The Rio Olympics have only just begun but the opening weekend of action already saw a number of horrific injuries, with cyclists and gymnasts coming off worst.

Cycling: Dutch cyclist Annemiek van Vleuten was in the lead when she fell while going around a rain-slicked corner in the treacherous descent to Rio de Janeiro in the women‘s road cycling race.

Van Vleuten was taken to a Rio hospital where "severe concussion and three small fractures in her lumbar spine" were diagnosed, according to the Dutch cycling federation KNWU. She later tweeted that she "will be fine."

Cycling: Italy‘s Vincenzo Nibali and Colombia‘s Sergio Henao also crashed out in Saturday‘s men‘s race on the same corner. Nibali suffered a fractured collarbone and Henao was reported to have fractured part of his pelvis. Australia‘s Richie Porte also broke his shoulder blade in the race.

Gymnastics: Frenchman Samir Ait Said‘s injury will go down in history as one of the most gruesome at the Olympics. His left leg snapped on his vault landing and, as he rolled over, his foot and the lower half of his shin dangled in the opposite direction to the rest of his leg.

Gymnastics: Germany‘s Andreas Toba ruptured the cruciate ligament in his right knee during the floor exercise but astonishingly still competed on the pommel horse afterwards in the men‘s team qualifying.

Tennis: German tennis player Dustin Brown rolled his ankle in his Olympic debut against Brazil‘s Thomaz Bellucci and had to stop the match in the second set. He later tweeted a picture of his ankle and said that he will be staying on in Rio to start his rehab. Brown is not the only failure in the German tennis team: Philipp Kohlschreiber suffered a stress fracture in his right foot.
