Rio de Janeiro (dpa) - Olympic organizers expect the diving pool to return to its natural blue colour later Wednesday as water treatment problems were identified as the reason it turned green the previous day.

The green pool for Tuesday‘s women‘s 10m synchronised platform event which amazed athletes and fans, and caused a stir on social media, before the ruling body FINA clarified what had happened.

"FINA can confirm that the reason for the unusual water colour observed during the Rio 2016 diving competitions is that the water tanks ran out some of the chemicals used in the water treatment process," a statement said.

As a result the pH level of the water was outside the usual range, causing the discolouration. The FINA Sport Medicine Committee conducted tests on the water quality and concluded that there was no risk to the health and safety of the athletes, and no reason for the competition to be affected."

Rio organizing committee spokesman Mario Andrada agreed that "there was no risk whatever for the health of anybody."

"We expect the colour to be back to blue shortly," he said ahead of Wednesday‘s event, the men‘s synchronised 3m springboard.
