UPDATE Love is in the air as US couple celebrate Valentine's Day on ice

Pyeongchang, South Korea (dpa) - US figure skating married couple Alexa and Chris Knierim spent Valentine‘s Day on ice and - perhaps predictably for February 14 - they finished 14th in Wednesday‘s pairs short programme.

Love was in the air in the Gangneung Ice Arena as they performed to the romantic love song "Come What May" from the film "Moulin Rouge."

"Well we were soaking it in and we knew that today was going to be a special day for us," Alexa Knierim said.

"You never know if we will be back on Olympic ice again, so we promised each other no matter what happens, mistakes or not, that we were going to be present every single second and really to soak in the moment."

The two paired up in 2012 after meeting through their figure skating coach, were engaged in 2014 and married two years later.

In the team figure skating event, in which the US won bronze, they touched lips on the rink to melt the hearts of spectators and viewers watching on television.

"When we kissed, in the back of my mind I was like: We‘re on Olympic ice," Alexa told People magazine. "It‘s still such a big deal, we‘re still like kids taking it in."

Recalling the first Valentine‘s Day they celebrated together, Alexa remembers coming home to discover a single rose, a teddy bear and a card on the bed, according to a USA Today report.

This time around, Valentine‘s Day was going to be unforgettable whatever the result.

Asked what he said to his wife after finishing their routine, Chris Knierim replied: "I said, ‘Great job and happy Valentine‘s Day‘."

He added: "It‘s been a lot of fun. I think there is always pressure in competitions, but today there wasn‘t any pressure.

"We did the hard stuff already and that was in the team event to make sure we did our job. Now this is the cherry on top, especially on Valentine‘s Day, it‘s a special thing. So we were just having fun and happy with how we skated."

China‘s Sui Wenjing and Han Cong led the way on 82.39 after the short programme, ahead of European champions Evgenia Tarasova and Vladimir Morozov (81.68) and the Canadians Meagan Duhamel and Eric Radford (76.82). The pairs free skating segment is on Thursday.
