Tel Aviv (dpa) - Israel officials on Saturday accused the Islamist Hamas group that controls the Gaza Strip of deliberate provocation during a mass march that precipitated violent clashes along Gaza‘s border with Israel.

"What we saw yesterday was an organized act of terrorism," Israeli army spokesman Ronen Maneli told reporters on Saturday.

At least 15 Palestinians were killed were killed by gunfire or tank shells near the Gaza Strip border, where tens of thousands marched in the name of Palestinian refugees and their descendants. More than 1,400 protesters were also injured, most by tear gas.

Maneli said all of those killed were men between the ages of 18 and 30. "We know the vast majority of them to be terror activists," he said.

UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres said he was "deeply concerned" and called for an independent investigation into the deaths following an emergency UN Security Council meeting on Friday in New York.

According to the Israeli army spokesman, around 30,000 Palestinians participated in the march, the vast majority of whom were women and children. Only a few thousand of the participants had advanced towards the border fence, he said.

The 1948 Arab-Israeli War created a mass exodus of Palestinians from what is now Israel. Many today live in the Gaza Strip, West Bank and neighbouring countries, as Israel does not allow them to return.

The Gaza Strip faces an increasingly dire humanitarian situation exacerbated by a blockade of the coastal enclave administered by Israel and Egypt for more than a decade.

Friday‘s "Great March of Return" kicked off a six-week-long border protest. Israel Defence Force Chief of Staff Gadi Eiskenkot said he expected tensions to persist in the coming weeks as Israel prepares to mark the 70th anniversary of its founding on May 14. The Palestinian protests are set to culminate on May 15.

"We are going to face big challenges in the context of the 70th Independence Day celebrations," Eiskenkot said.
