Kiev (dpa) - A Ukrainian commission has three days to find out the source of claims - denied by the government - linking a Ukrainian factory in selling rocket engines to North Korea, President Petro Poroshenko said on Wednesday.

"I am convinced, that this will allow us to find the true source and motivation behind these baseless lies," he said as he announced the new body, which will report to the country‘s security council.

"Ukraine values its professional reputation as a reliable partner in the realm of security and non-proliferation of rocket technology," he said.

The New York Times reported on Monday that the Ukrainian state-owned factory Yuzhmash had "fallen on hard times" since the ouster of Ukraine‘s pro-Russian president three years ago as "the Russians cancelled upgrades of their nuclear fleet."

The report also stated that "experts believe it [the factory] is the most likely source of the engines that in July powered the two ICBM [intercontinental ballistic missile] tests, which were the first to suggest that North Korea has the range ... to threaten American cities."

Yuzhmash issued its own denial of the report, saying it "has never had any relation to North Korean rocket programmes of a cosmic or defence character."

"Yuzhmash, as a state enterprise, completely complies with the requirements of the Missile Technology Control Regime, of which Ukraine has been a participant since 1998," the factory said in a statement.
