London (dpa) - UK Independence Party (UKIP) leader Henry Bolton was given a vote of no confidence from his party‘s executive committee on Sunday, paving the way for his potential ousting within weeks.

The ruling committee voted unanimously, the British news agency PA reported. The decision on whether Bolton will be able to remain the leader of the Eurosceptic UKIP now moves to party members.

"This decision will automatically trigger an emergency general meeting of the party," a UKIP spokesman said, according to PA.

Per party rules, said meeting must take place within 28 days.

Bolton faced calls to resign last week after racist text messages written by his girlfriend were published in the Daily Mail. The 54-year-old broke up with Jo Marney shortly after the reports.
