Two thousand people in Bucharest protest new judicial controls

Bucharest (dpa) - More than 2,000 people took to the streets of the Romanian capital Bucharest on Sunday to protest new laws brought in by the socialist-liberal coalition to curb judicial action against corruption.

Protesters yelled slogans like "Thieves!" and "Step down!" the Mediafax news agency reported.

The protest was directed against new laws approved by the lower house of parliament last week that critics believe are intended to intimidate judges and public prosecutors in their fight against corruption and prevent them in their work.

The new laws still have to be approved by the upper house, the Senate, and signed by President Klaus Iohannis.

Romania has since the beginning of the year seen repeated protests against plans by the new socialist-liberal government to ease the legal code apparently to protect corrupt politicians.
