London (dpa) - The Twitter accounts of far-right group Britain First and its two top leaders were suspended on Monday as the social media giant launched a drive against "hateful and abusive content."

The accounts of Britain First deputy leader Jayda Fransen, whose anti-Muslim videos were re-tweeted by US President Donald Trump last month, leader Paul Golding and Britain First HQ were all suspended.

Twitter said it was starting to "enforce updates to the Twitter rules and media policy to reduce hateful conduct and abusive behaviour" from Monday.

Its "hateful conduct policy" includes a ban on threats, attacks or promotion violence against people "on the basis of race, ethnicity, national origin, sexual orientation, gender, gender identity, religious affiliation, age, disability or disease."

"We also do not allow accounts whose primary purpose is inciting harm towards others on the basis of these categories," Twitter said.

Two Facebook accounts used by Fransen and Britain First were still viewable, but an inflammatory anti-Muslim video posted on Facebook by Fransen last week appeared to have been deleted.

Fransen, 31, and Golding, 35, were both arrested on charges of inciting hatred in Belfast, Northern Ireland on Thursday at a court where Fransen was already accused of similar offences linked to an anti-Muslim rally in August.

According to anti-fascist campaigners Hope Not Hate, Britain First is an "anti-Islam, anti-immigration, nationalist" group with some 1,000 members.
