Turkish parliament allows Islamic clerics to register marriages

Istanbul (dpa) - Turkey‘s parliament voted Wednesday to allow state-sanctioned Sunni Islamic clerics to register marriages, broadcaster CNN Turk reported, in a move that was sharply criticized by the secular opposition and women‘s rights activists.

Up till now, only civil marriages have been recognized in Turkey, though couples often choose to have a religious ceremony in addition to the official, civil ceremony.

The bill, supported by President Recep Tayyip Erdogan‘s Islamic-conservative Justice and Development Party (AKP) and ultra-nationalists, was passed in a late night vote.

Supporters say the legal changes help meet cultural demands and will prevent unregistered marriages.

The main opposition party, the staunchly secular People‘s Republican Party (CHP), voiced sharp concerns about keeping religion and state separate. Some critics said the bill also denied equal opportunities to non-Sunnis.

The pro-Kurdish Peoples‘ Democratic Party (HDP) was also against the measure, with a member of parliament from the bloc speaking of a potential erosion of women‘s rights, including in divorce.

Turkey is legally a secular country but increasingly is prone to Islamic-conservative trends.

Recently, women‘s rights groups have raised concerns about under-age marriages, which they fear will increase if state-registered muftis are allowed to perform civil marriages.

Erdogan himself came out strongly in favour of the new bill.
