Turkey sentences Wall Street Journal reporter to two years in jail

Istanbul/New York (dpa) - The Wall Street Journal has denounced the jail sentence handed down to one of its reporters by a Turkish court over a 2015 article she wrote about the armed conflict in Turkey‘s restive south-east.

"This was an unfounded criminal charge and wildly inappropriate conviction that wrongly singled out a balanced Wall Street Journal report," WSJ editor-in-chief Gerard Baker was quoted as saying by the New York-based newspaper.

The journalist, Ayla Albayrak, a dual Finnish-Turkish national, plans to appeal the sentence of two years and one month, handed down on Tuesday. She is currently in New York.

The report, which focused on the armed conflict between Turkish forces and Kurdish militants aligned with the illegal Kurdistan Workers‘ Party (PKK), was deemed propoganda for a terrorist organization.

The WSJ called her report "commendable and insightful work."

The Committee to Protect Journalists called on Turkish authorities not to contest an appeal and to drop all charges against Albayrak.

"Dozens of journalists are imprisoned for their work in Turkey and this conviction is a signal that conditions for the press are continuing to deteriorate," said CPJ‘s Nina Ognianova in a statement.

"Turkey‘s judicial system has become an instrument of persecution."

In addition to dozens of Turkish journalists, Deniz Yucel, a correspondent for Germany‘s Die Welt newspaper, remains behind bars. Jailed since February, he has yet to appear in court.

Mesale Tolu, a Turkish-German citizen who worked for a leftist news outlet, is set to go on trial in Turkey on Wednesday, also on terrorist related charges.
