Turkey says Iraqi Kurdish referendum will 'have a cost'

Istanbul (dpa) - Turkey‘s Foreign Ministry said on Thursday that if Iraqi Kurds move ahead with plans to hold a referendum on independence, the move "will absolutely have a cost."

"We find the [Kurdistan Regional Government] leadership‘s insistence, within the context of referendum, and its increasingly emotional statements alarming," the ministry said.

The statement comes after Iraq‘s parliament in Baghdad rejected the referendum, calling it a threat to regional stability.

In the West, there is concern the referendum could have a negative impact on efforts to defeat Islamic State and other extremist groups.

In addition to Turkey, other countries with sizeable Kurdish minorities, such as Iran, have strongly rejected the proposed independence referendum.
