Istanbul (dpa) - The Turkish parliament late on Wednesday passed legislation placing all online streaming platforms, including news outlets, under the monitoring of the country‘s broadcasting regulator, according to the state-run Anadolu news agency.

The opposition slammed the move as censorship. The government is "blocking all the platforms where the opposition can breathe and express itself," Baris Yarkadas from the centre-left Republican People‘s Party (CHP) wrote on his Twitter feed.

Platforms such as Netflix could also be affected, experts have warned.

The law, drafted by President Recep Tayyip Erdogan‘s ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP), will require companies to obtain a license from the regulator before streaming online.

The regulator can shut down the service within 24 hours with a court ruling.

Turkey blocks some 172,000 website, including Wikipedia, according to Yaman Akdeniz, an academic who tracks censorship. There have been periods were Twitter and YouTube were restricted. Thousands of specific Twitter accounts remain blocked.

Critical media platforms in Turkey have increasingly moved online in recent years, owing to government restrictions.
