Tsipras says 1 billion euros to be distributed to crisis-hit Greeks

Athens (dpa) - Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras said on Monday that 1 billion euros (1.17 billion dollars) would be distributed to 3.4 million citizens hit by austerity measures.

This is the second consecutive year that the Greek government is providing those hit the most by the country‘s financial crisis - poorer pensioners and families, and the unemployed - additional financial support in November and December.

An additional 360 million euros will to paid to the state electricity company (DEI) so that there are no increases in electricity prices, Tsipras said in a televised speech.

This was possible, as it was in 2016, because Greece had surpassed its primary surplus targets - excluding debt services - as agreed to with its creditors.

"The better the country‘s financial situation, the more support can be given to those who need it most," said Tsipras.

However, some analysts see Tsipras‘ move as a response to poor opinion poll results. The conservative opposition party New Democracy has for months been 8-13 percentage points ahead of his Socialist ruling party SYRIZA.
