Trump's lawyer denies involvement in Russia in statement to committee

Washington (dpa) - A long-time lawyer for President Donald Trump has denied any involvement in Russia‘s interference in the 2016 US presidential election.

"I have never engaged with, been paid by, paid for, or conversed with any member of the Russian Federation or anyone else to hack anyone or any organization," Michael Cohen said Tuesday in a statement he was to make before a congressional committee.

Cohen also flatly denied speaking with any Russian or any other person to hack or interfere with the election, and said he never saw a "hint of anything" that demonstrated Trump was involved in Russian interference in the election or any form of Russian collusion.

Cohen was to deliver the statement to a congressional committee on Tuesday, but the session was cancelled because he circulated his statement to the media ahead of time, the committee‘s leaders said in a joint statement.

"We were disappointed that Mr Cohen decided to pre-empt today‘s interview by releasing a public statement prior to his engagement with Committee staff, in spite of the Committee‘s requests that he refrain from public comment," committee chairman and Republican Senator Richard Burr and ranking Democrat Senator Mark R Warner said in a joint statement.

The committee is investigating Russian interference in the 2016 election. The CIA and other US security agencies have blamed Moscow of having played a role in cyberattacks.

Other congressional committees and a special counsel also are looking into Russian meddling in the US election. One of the key questions is whether there were deals made with people in the Trump‘s campaign.
