Trump voices support for unified Spain in face of Catalonia vote

Washington (dpa) - US President Donald Trump said he supports Spain remaining unified in the face of a controversial referendum on independence in Spain‘s wealthy Catalonia region.

"We are dealing with a great great country and it should remain united," Trump said when asked about the vote during a visit by Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy to the White House.

Rajoy and his conservative People‘s Party (PP) are categorically opposed to Sunday‘s referendum and have repeatedly insisted that it will not take place. Rajoy‘s government and the country‘s judiciary have taken various measures in an effort to prevent it from going ahead.

Rajoy stressed he thought a vote would be "very wrong" and insisted it could not properly take place as planned on Sunday.

"Let‘s go back to common sense and put an end to this whole story," he said, speaking through a translator, during a joint press conference with Trump.

The leaders participated in a series of meetings at the White House to discuss cooperation on counter-terrorism, the fight against Islamic State, the situation in North Korea and trade.

Trump pointed to a terrorist attack in Spain last month and vowed, "America stands with you in confronting this evil that threatens all of humanity."
