Da Nang, Vietnam (dpa) - US President Donald Trump said on Saturday that Russian President Vladimir Putin has repeatedly assured him that Moscow did nothing to influence the 2016 presidential elections.

"Every time he sees me he says, ‘I didn‘t do that,‘ and I really believe that when he tells me that, he means it," Trump told journalists on Air Force One while on his way to Hanoi.

"He said he didn‘t meddle. I asked him again. You can only ask so many times," Trump added.

The US leader had exchanged words with Putin in Da Nang on the sidelines of the APEC summit in the Vietnamese city.

Trump also praised his sense of understanding with Putin and said that a stronger US-Russia relationship would help in dealing with North Korea, one of the main points of the US leader‘s trip to Asia.

"You know you are talking about millions and millions of lives. This isn‘t baby stuff, this is the real deal. And if Russia helped us in addition to China, that problem would go away a lot faster," he said, referring to Pyongyang‘s recent series of nuclear and missile tests.

Russia has been accused multiple times of meddling in the 2016 US presidential elections. Special prosecutor Robert Mueller is currently investigating whether there was any Russian interference.

Trump was on his way to Hanoi on Saturday, his second-to-last stop on an 11-day trip to Asia. He is scheduled to head to the Philippines on Sunday, where he will meet Philippine counterpart Rodrigo Duterte.
