Washington (dpa) - US President Donald Trump on Wednesday defended his decision to congratulate Russian President Vladimir Putin on his re-election, saying a good relationship with Russia is necessary to help solve some of the world‘s problems.

"The Fake News Media is crazed because they wanted me to excoriate him. They are wrong! Getting along with Russia (and others) is a good thing, not a bad thing," he said on Twitter.

"They can help solve problems with North Korea, Syria, Ukraine, ISIS, Iran and even the coming Arms Race," Trump said.

Trump also noted that former presidents Bill Clinton, George W Bush and Barack Obama also called Putin during their time in office.

Bush tried to get along with Putin, but didn‘t have the "smarts," Trump said. "Obama and Clinton tried, but didn‘t have the energy or chemistry (remember RESET). PEACE THROUGH STRENGTH!"

Putin won another six-year term Sunday, in an election that drew international criticism for lacking genuine competition, and which was marred by allegations of fraud.

Trump came under fire on Tuesday after he told reporters that he spoke with Putin by telephone to congratulate him on winning a fourth term. He described the conversation as "a very good call" and said that he and Putin were likely to meet soon.

Among the members of Congress who blasted Trump for congratulating Putin was Senator John McCain, a fellow Republican, who said, "An American president does not lead the free world by congratulating dictators on winning sham elections."
