Trump calls EU 'protectionist,' calls for reciprocal trade

Washington (dpa) - US President Donald Trump has blasted the European Union for being "protectionist" on trade and called for efforts to make trade between the US and the bloc more "reciprocal."

"I‘m all for the European Union, but we have things that we can barely sell into the European Union. They‘re very protectionist and we‘re not. And you have to be reciprocal," Trump told reporters aboard Air Force One on his way to talks with French President Emmanuel Macron.

Trump has come under fire from European leaders and others for his own protectionist stance on trade as he re-evaluates international trade deals and pledges to put "America First" on trade matters.

The US is undertaking a review of steel imports, and Trump specifically mentioned steel dumping as a "big problem," referring to China and others. Germany has also been among the nations the US has called out on steel in the past.

"They‘re dumping steel and destroying our steel industry, they‘ve been doing it for decades, and I‘m stopping it. It‘ll stop," he said, in the remarks released by the White House on Thursday. He said the US could consider tariffs or quotas on steel imports.
