Trial of Islamic State militant in Istanbul nightclub attack to start

Istanbul (dpa) - The man accused of being an Islamic State militant who shot up a nightclub in Istanbul just after midnight on January 1, killing 39 revellers, is due to begin Monday.

Uzbek national Uzbek Abdulkadir Masharipov, the gunman, was caught two weeks after the attack, which also left dozens injured.

He and 56 accomplices - from Europe, Arab nations, Central Asian countries and Turkey - face multiple life sentences for the New Year‘s Eve massacre, the state-run Anadolu news agency reported.

Islamic State is accused of carrying out numerous attacks in Turkey in 2015 and 2016. The Reina nightclub shooting was the last major attack by the group in a Turkish city, as authorities have cracked down sharply on the extremists‘ networks.

Authorities are also carrying out operations against Kurdish militants across the country. A peace process with the armed Kurdistan Workers‘ Party (PKK) collapsed in 2015 and violence in the 30-year conflict restarted.

Tourism, which has been badly battered as a result of political instability, attacks and a failed coup, has shown sign of recovery.

A strict state-of-emergency is in effect, granting the government sweeping powers, amid concerns of democratic backsliding.
