Berlin (dpa) - Trains operated by Germany‘s state-owned Deutsche Bahn rail company were less punctual over 2017 than the year before, with just 78.5 per cent of long-distance trains running on time, according to company figures made available to dpa on Thursday.

The figure was 0.4 percentage points down on the previous year, with Deutsche Bahn attributing this to construction work, autumn storms and arson attacks during the Hamburg G20 summit in July.

Deutsche Bahn defines as punctual any train arriving or leaving up to six minutes later than scheduled.

Chief executive Richard Lutz had set a target of 81-per-cent punctuality, and the company has declared its intention of raising this to 82 per cent in 2018.

Commuter trains were also less punctual in 2017, with 94.4 per cent on time, 0.3 percentage points down on the previous year.
