Tokyo (dpa) - Tokyo‘s city government started collecting electronic waste on Thursday to help produce the gold, silver and bronze medals needed for the country‘s hosting of the 2020 Olympics.

Tokyo authorities are accepting nine types of small digital devices, including smartphones, digital cameras and portable music players, in an effort to recover the eight tons of precious metals required to manufacture the 5,000 medals.

The 2020 organizing committee said millions of mobile phones are required to achieve the target and they are calling on the Japanese public to donate "discarded or obsolete electronic devices" for the purpose.

Tokyo Governor Yuriko Koike attended Thursday‘s event marking the start of Tokyo‘s collection drive, which she calls an effort to make use of an "urban mine." Recycling will begin nationwide in April.

Japan‘s largest telecommunications company NTT Docomo and the Japan Environmental Sanitation Centre will be responsible for the actual recovery of the metals from the devices.
