Three-way talks set to start long slog towards new German government

Berlin (dpa) - Formal talks that could lead to Germany‘s first national three-way governing coalition are set to begin Friday in Berlin.

The meeting between Chancellor Angela Merkel‘s Christian Democrats (CDU), the Free Democrats (FDP), the Greens and the CDU‘s sister party, the Bavaria-only Christian Social Union (CSU), are set to start at 4:30 pm (1430 GMT).

They come almost four weeks after Merkel led her party to victory.

However, the CDU/CSU saw so many losses that they must now reach out to two parties that are anything but natural allies, with the CDU or each other.

The talks come after days of smaller meetings between the different groups to clear the way for Friday.

Late Thursday the parties‘ general secretaries said they had come up with 12 main topics for discussion, with finance, Europe and climate and energy topping the list.

Merkel has already said the negotiations could take through December, partially because the FDP and the Greens are so far apart on issues such as fiscal policy and the eurozone.

Nor will the question of migration be an easy one on which to reach agreement.

The parties expect their next meeting to be on Tuesday, after the first session of the new Bundestag, which will mark an historic moment - one that troubles many Germans - as the country‘s first far-right party, the Alternative for Germany (AfD), to enter the parliament in modern history takes it seats.
