Bucharest (dpa) - Three Romanian ministers, including two currently embroiled in a criminal investigation surrounding an illegal property deal, resigned on Thursday after sustained pressure from the country‘s prime minister.

The Minister for Regional Development Sevil Shhaideh, the Minister for EU funds Rovana Plumb and Transport Minister Razvan Cuc announced their resignations after days of pressure from Prime Minister Mihai Tudose.

During an earlier six-hour party meeting Tudose, of the ruling Social Democrats (PSD), threatened to quit if the ministers did not step down.

State prosecutors had been investigating Shhaideh and Plumb for weeks over their possible participation in a illegal land transfer deal that favoured a company owned by PSD head Liviu Dragnea.

Tudose had repeatedly called on Shhaideh and Plumb to resign as their portfolios dealt directly with EU funds and the investigation into the women had raised concerns in the EU Commission. He also accused Cuc of developing infrastructure projects too slowly.

Dragnea was unable to become prime minister in spite of the PSD‘s triumph in December polls because of a conviction for electoral fraud.

He openly declared his intention to keep control over the government, through loyal ministers like Shhaideh.

Tudose was voted in as prime minister by parliament on June 29.
