Paris (dpa) - Thousands of Kurds demonstrated on Saturday in the French city of Strasbourg, calling for the release of Abdullah Ocalan, the founder of the outlawed Kurdistan Workers‘ Party (PKK), who has been imprisoned since 1999.

Police said 11,000 people took part in the rally, according to news agency AFP, while the organizers said there were between 25,000 and 30,000 participants.

Kurds gather in Strasbourg every year to demonstrate on the anniversary of Ocalan‘s arrest.

Ocalan was sentenced to death in 1999, but the penalty was later commuted to life in prison, and he has been incarcerated in a prison on the island of Imrali ever since.

For his supporters, Ocalan is the undisputed leader of the PKK, which is listed as a terrorist organization in Turkey, Europe and the US.
