Kiev (dpa) - Several thousand supporters of former Georgian president Mikheil Saakashvili took to the streets of the Ukrainian capital Kiev on Sunday to demand the ouster of President Petro Poroschenko.

It‘s estimated that as many as 2,500 took part in the demonstration Sunday in the inner city, with 3,000 police also deployed.

Additionally, hundreds of others turned out in other cities around the country, particularly in western and central Ukraine.

Saakashvili, who was kicked out of Ukraine on Monday, had called for the demonstrations.

Saakashvili, once an ally of Poroshenko, had been drumming up support at rallies throughout the country for an anti-corruption campaign targeting the Ukrainian president prior to his deportation.

Poroshenko helped Saakashvili to become governor of the Odessa region in 2015. But Saakashvili resigned a year and a half later, accusing Poroshenko of perpetuating entrenched corruption.
