Suspect in Paris metro attack facing terrorism charge

Paris (dpa) - A man arrested after a knife attack on a soldier in the Paris metro last week has been placed under formal investigation and detained, a judicial source said on Monday.

The suspect is under investigation on a charge of attempted murder of an official linked with a terrorist undertaking, the source said.

Nobody was injured in the incident in Chatelet metro station on Friday when a man armed with a knife attacked a soldier on patrol as part of the French army‘s anti-terror deployment.

Since a series of Islamist terrorist attacks in France over the past two and a half years that left almost 240 dead, thousands of soldiers have been deployed to patrol streets, busy areas and public buildings.

The French government said on Thursday that the policy will be continued but with soldiers being deployed with more flexibility than before.

The security forces deployed under the policy have themselves repeatedly been targeted.

Last month a man drove a car into soldiers on patrol in a Paris suburb, injuring six; in April a policeman was killed by a lone gunman on the Champs-Elysees, among other incidents.
