State of emergency set to be extended for sixth time in Turkey

Istanbul (dpa) - One-and-a-half years after a failed coup attempt against President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, Turkey is set to extend a national state of emergency for a sixth time.

The national security council recommended on Wednesday that the state of emergency be extended, Anadolu news agency reported. The government has previously said it will follow this recommendation.

Erdogan‘s Justice and Development Party dominates the Turkish parliament, making the body‘s approval only a formality. Erdogan himself chairs the security council and the cabinet.

Human rights groups and Turkey‘s political opposition have long called for the lifting of the state of emergency, along with businesses that see it as unnerving investors.

The Turkish government claims that it needs the emergency powers in order to effectively fight terrorist groups.

The extension is usually for a period of three months, giving Erdogan broad powers during that time to rule by decree.

Under a state of emergency, these decrees cannot be challenged in the constitutional court.

Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu has told journalists that he "sincerely" hoped this extension would be the last.
