Moscow (dpa) - A woman injured in a metro bombing in St Petersburg nearly three weeks back died in hospital on Friday, taking the death toll to 16.

The 57-year-old woman died in hospital around 6 am (0400 GMT), Deputy Governor Anna Mityanina said in a post on Twitter.

The bombing on an underground train in central St Petersburg on April 3 is considered the deadliest terrorist attack in Russia‘s second-largest city.

Authorities believe the attack was motivated by Islamist extremism and perpetrated by a suicide bomber - a 22-year-old ethnic Central Asian man with Russian citizenship, Akbarzhon Jalilov, whose remains were found on the train.

Earlier this week, authorities in a suburb of Moscow detained a Central Asian man suspected of plotting the attack. Russian state media have identified that suspect as 27-year-old Abror Azimov and said he confessed to the crime.

Several other Central Asian men have been detained on suspicion of complicity.
