With 33-per-cent support, Merkel‘s conservative Christian Democrats (CDU) saw their lead over the SPD shrink to just 4 points from 14 points one week ago.

The gap between the coalition partners was at its smallest in the weekly Emnid poll since July 2012 - one year year before the 2013 general election.

Germany‘s two main opposition parties also suffered as a result of the SPD bounce, with both the Greens and the hard-left Die Linke losing two points to achieve 8 per cent.
Support for the far-right populist Alternative for Germany (AfD) remained unchanged at 11 per cent, as did that of the market liberal Free Democrats (FDP) at 6 per cent. Neither party is currently represented in the national parliament.

With a combined total of 45 per cent, a government made up of the SPD, Die Linke and the Greens is looking possible. The current government is a "grand coalition" of the SPD and conservatives.

Pollster Emnid questioned 2,233 voters between January 26 and February 2 about their general election choices.

Emnid also asked another 500 people on Thursday which of the two candidates they would prefer as chancellor. Forty-one per cent of respondents chose Merkel, ahead of 38 per cent for Schulz.
