Social Democrat Schulz looking to emulate Macron in German elections

Berlin (dpa) - Martin Schulz, the Social Democrats‘ (SPD) candidate for chancellor in the upcoming German elections, is looking to emulate recently elected French President Emmanuel Macron in his election campaign.

Macron balanced his pro-European stance by calling for an overhaul of the structures of the eurozone architecture, which are widely seen as undemocratic.

"I‘m going to do exactly the same," Schulz told German daily Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung on Friday. "We need a strong new impetus for Europe that also awakens a new enthusiasm for Europe."

Schulz called for future European fiscal policy to be linked to refugee policy, saying that Germany, as the EU‘s largest net financial contributor, couldn‘t accept "that countries who take so much money, like Poland, have left us in the lurch on the refugee question."
