Sochi workers received unpaid wages, says IOC chief

Sochi, Russia (dpa) - Around 8 million dollars in unpaid wages has gone to workers who built Sochi Olympic venues following talks between Russian and Olympic authorities.

International Olympic Committee (IOC) president Thomas Bach confirmed Monday the issue had been settled following complaints from human rights groups.

Russian officials had said last week outstanding wages had now been paid to Russian and migrant workers.

The IOC approached the organizing committee after hearing of the complaints.

"We had a meeting with the deputy prime minister Dmitry Kozak and the ombudsman of the Russian federation for human rights and, as a result, 277 million roubles (7.88 million dollars) have been paid to workers in 13 companies to address this issue," Bach said.

Bach said that on issues such as human rights or workers‘ conditions "whenever we had information which was Olympic related we addressed it with the organization committee in order to get clarification or to solve the problem."
