SIDEBAR Waiting 11 years no problem for 2028 Olympic hosts Los Angeles

Lima (dpa) - Sweetened by at least 100 million extra dollars, an 11-year wait is no problem for Los Angeles as freshly-declared host of the 2028 Olympics.

"The people of Los Angeles don‘t perceive the 2028 Games as 11 years in the future - we know that our Games start today," mayor Eric Garcetti said.

A rare double allocation - with Paris getting 2024 and LA 2028 - by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) on Wednesday gives the Californians a record amount time to prepare for what will be their third Olympics, following 1932 and 1984.

And a whopping 83 per cent Olympic approval rate from Angelinos appears to underline Garcetti‘s statement.

Extensive use of existing and temporary venues for maximum sustainability are among the keys of the bid which also passed a final evaluation in flying colours after LA had made the double allocation possible by volunteering to give up its 2024 bid and wait another four years.

"The many opportunities presented by an Olympic Games in 2028 in Los Angeles would far outweigh any potential uncertainties of awarding the Games 11 years in advance," evaluation committee chief Patrick Baumann told the IOC Session ahead of the vote.

"The Olympic Games are in good hands. Two world class cities have proven the ability to stage outstanding Games. There is low risk and high reward for Olympic movement and the cities."

One of LA‘s rewards is getting 1.8 billion dollars from the IOC to help stage the Games, compared to Paris‘ 1.7 billion. The difference of 100 million is no gift from the IOC but rather part of a regular increase for host cities.

LA has come to the rescue for the IOC once again, just as in 1984 when the IOC was battered by the Munich 1972 massacre, huge debts around Montreal 1976 and the US-led boycott of the 1980 Moscow Games.

Now they offer stability and likely a healthy profit at a time when the Olympic Movement is rocked by corruption allegations around the awarding of the 2016 and 2020 Games to Rio and Tokyo and the doping affair in Russian sport.

It also buys the IOC time to revamp the bid process at a time when many mainly western cities are dropping bids or show no interest at all in the Games, mostly for financial reasons.

LA only stepped in when Boston withdrew, and the original 2024 race then saw Hamburg, Budapest and Rome drop out one after another.

But that never stopped the Californians, who aim to reinvent the Games under the slogan "Follow the Sun" for a modern and youthful experience from the locals and the city are also to profit - from now on.

A first taste came Wednesday through their attire for for the final presentation.

"Sneakers and suits - its a unique brand of California cool we will bring to the 2028 Games," bid and now organizing committee chief Casey Wassermann said, speaking of "optimism and progress.

"The opportunity ahead of us is unprecedented. There are 11 years to maximise it for city and the movement."
