Pyeongchang, South Korea (dpa) - US ski star Lindsey Vonn has admitted she will "absolutely" miss the Olympics after she competes in her likely final Olympic event in Pyeongchang on Thursday.

The four-time Olympian, who finished third in the women‘s downhill on Wednesday behind Italy‘s Sofia Goggia and Norway‘s Ragnhild Mowinckel, will start in the two-run alpine combined event on Thursday but has basically ruled out returning again for Beijing in 2022.

"I‘m gonna miss the Olympics," she said after her race Wednesday. "That‘s one of the reasons why it was so emotional for me today."

"I love being in the start gate with so much pressure you feel suffocated, but somehow you will yourself to give everything you have and you throw yourself down the mountain in hopes of a medal."

The 33-year-old, who missed the Sochi Games in 2014 due to injury, has said that she will continue on the tour, but that only a "medical miracle" would see her return for another Games.

During the Pyeongchang Games, Vonn has spoken at length about ongoing knee pain, sustained after various high-speed crashes on the ski slopes.

"I‘m absolutely going to miss it," Vonn continued. "I wish I could keep skiing, I wish that my body didn‘t hurt as bad as it does."

"I feel very lucky that I was able to ski my best today and that I was able to get on the podium in my last Olympic downhill. That‘s something really special, so I‘m very thankful for that."

Vonn, who has 81 World Cup victories to her name, the most of any woman, has otherwise won gold in the downhill and bronze in the super-g at the Vancouver Games in 2010.

She has said in the past that she hopes to keep skiing in the World Cup until she beats the overall record of 86, set by Sweden‘s Ingemar Stenmark.
