London (dpa) - Donald Trump may have cancelled his planned visit to Britain, but the Madame Tussauds waxworks museum has made sure that Londoners can still catch a glimpse of the US president.

After Trump scrapped the trip, the museum placed a wax figure of Trump outside the new US embassy in London on Friday.

"Trump cancelled his visit so we stepped in!" the museum said on Twitter, posting a photograph of the waxwork outside the new building at Nine Elms in south-western London, which is scheduled to open next month.

"It was certainly a surprise for the workmen at the embassy," the museum said.

Several construction workers posed for photographs with the fake Trump and at least one journalist pretended to interview the waxwork.

The London museum normally houses a Trump waxwork in a recreation of the US president‘s Oval Office, alongside other world leaders and politicians.

"Donald‘s first figure was launched in Madame Tussauds New York in 1997, long before he entered the world of politics," it said.

"Donald gave a sitting for his first wax figure, where hundreds of measurements and photos were taken in order to recreate a perfect likeness."

Trump‘s visit - planned for next month - had been set to include the opening of the new US embassy in London, but he said on Twitter he did not like the building and thought it was a "bad deal" financially.
