Berlin (dpa) - A member of the right-wing populist Alternative for Germany (AfD) party was ejected from the visitors‘ gallery of the German lower house of parliament for disrupting the swearing-in of Chancellor Angela Merkel on Wednesday.

Matthias Vogler, who is standing for election to the regional Bavarian parliament later this year for the upstart party that entered the Bundestag for the first time in September, unfurled a banner that read "Merkel must go!"

Sources within the AfD said that Vogler works in the office of Martin Sichert, a federal lawmaker for the AfD from Bavaria.

The displaying of banners is against the rules of the Bundestag.

Meanwhile, another AfD member has been fined 1,000 euros (1,240 dollars) for breaking Bundestag rules by tweeting a photo of his ballot paper in the vote to elect Merkel for her fourth term in office with a cross next to "No."

Lawmaker Petr Bystron from Bavaria tweeted the image with the words "Not my chancellor."

The Bundestag‘s administration was examining whether Bystron had invalidated his vote by publishing it on Twitter.

Merkel was re-elected chancellor by 364 votes out of the 688 votes cast in the secret ballot on Wednesday. At least 355 votes were required in the 709-seat chamber.
