SIDEBAR Trump wishes Merkel and Germany a 'successful election'

Washington (dpa) - US President Donald Trump called German Chancellor Angela Merkel on Friday with well wishes for this weekend‘s election.

Trump called Merkel "to wish her country a successful election," a White House statement said. He also "underscored the steadfast bond between the United States and Germany."

Trump and Merkel have clashed on a slew of issues, and their personal relationship has sometimes seemed strained, especially given Trump‘s tweets slamming German policy and - at times directly - Merkel, who does not tweet.

Trump‘s America First rhetoric and his decision to quit the Paris climate deal have riled Germany‘s political establishment. Trump also has railed against the trade gap between the US and Germany and has called Merkel‘s open-door migration policy a "catastrophic mistake."

In July, however, Trump praised Merkel‘s handling of the Group of 20 summit in Hamburg, in the face of divisions at the meeting and street protests.

"You have been amazing and done an incredible job," Trump told Merkel at a summit forum on women‘s rights. "Your leadership is incredible and absolutely inspiring."
